Everyone remembers the hair. Fewer people remember that A Flock of Seagulls had one of the best guitar sounds of the ’80s, and a Grammy to show for it. They were made for MTV, and MTV was made for them.
Liverpool, 1979
A Flock of Seagulls formed in Liverpool in 1979, led by singer and keyboard player Mike Score. Shimmering synths, atmospheric guitar, soaring tunes and a look nobody could miss made them international stars as MTV took off, and their futuristic videos introduced millions of Americans to electronic pop.
The debut: I Ran and Space Age Love Song
A Flock of Seagulls (1982) was a hit around the world, with “I Ran (So Far Away)”, “Space Age Love Song”, “Telecommunication” and “Modern Love Is Automatic”. “I Ran” went top 10 in the US and became one of the defining songs of early MTV. The album went Gold in the US and New Zealand and Platinum in Canada. The instrumental “D.N.A.” won them the Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
Listen, Wishing and the years after
Listen (1983) polished the sound further. “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)” was another international hit and is still one of their most loved songs, and it helped the album into the top 20 in the UK and the US. “Nightmares” and “Transfer Affection” came from the same record. The Story of a Young Heart (1984) brought the title track and “Remember David”, and Dream Come True (1986) kept the atmospheric style as trends shifted.
Is A Flock of Seagulls new wave?
Yes. A Flock of Seagulls are one of the defining synth-driven new wave bands of the early ’80s. Their mix of synthesizers, echoing guitars and futuristic style made “I Ran (So Far Away)” an MTV-era new wave classic.
Ascension and on tour today
After years of touring and lineup changes, Mike Score kept the band going. The Light at the End of the World came out in 1995, and in 2018 key original members reunited for Ascension, orchestral versions of their classics recorded with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Synthwave, indie and electronic artists still borrow from their sound. They’re on the road this winter, including the Totally Tubular Festival in January 2027. See New Wave Concerts.
