“I’ll stop the world and melt with you.” Few lines from the ’80s have been sung in more cars, at more weddings, in more commercials. Modern English wrote it, and it’s only part of their story.
From post-punk to a new wave anthem
Modern English formed in Colchester, England, in 1979, with Robbie Grey on vocals, and signed to the 4AD label. Their early records were dark post-punk. After the Snow (1982) brightened the sound, and “I Melt with You” became a favorite on American college radio and MTV. Its place in the film Valley Girl (1983) made it a teen anthem.
Is Modern English new wave?
Yes. Modern English are a British new wave band, and “I Melt with You” is one of the best-known new wave songs of the ’80s. Their earlier records lean post-punk, but After the Snow is classic new wave.
